Crested Butte: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of the Rockies

Crested Butte, Colorado is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Coming from someone who has a biased opinion(I was born and raised in this special little town). Located about 250 miles southwest of Denver is home to an oasis of adventure and beauty. Crested Butte is a year round playground for everyone who makes the time to travel there.

Winter Activities Recommendations:

Skiing/Snowboarding – Mount Crested Butte is known for extreme terrain with some beginner slopes as well. Be prepared for heavy snow conditions and breathtaking views. For more information check out this website to book your passes.

Ski-Skating – Located in the town of Crested Butte is a small ice rink that has public ice skating hours for cheap. Rent some skates and try for yourself. Not an ice skater but like to watch hockey games? Ask inside for information on the next hockey game and watch the locals in a friendly game. From this same building you can rent sleds and nordic gear as well for nearby trails and hills.

Summer Activities Recommendations:

Swimming:

Devils Punch Bowls – Full day trip with hiking, cliff jumping, gorgeous views and a little drive. This is something you can not miss. Be prepared for a bit more of an adventure off the beaten track.

Irwin Lake – Perfect place to relax, float on the water and read a book. Irwin lake is located about 30 minutes outside of town on twisting dirt roads.

Blue Mesa – A huge reservoir located outside of Gunnison Colorado. Perfect place to hang out or rent a boat and try some water activities. My recommendation is to camp on the beaches for a weekend and do some exploring.

Long Lake – Take a steep 15 minute hike from the neighborhood of Meridian Lake. Once you arrive at the top you see breathtaking views and a perfect way to cool down is to take a rope swing straight into the refreshing water.

Slate River – Take a float and float down the river while enjoying the views of the river side house and mountains that surround you.

Hiking – You will be in a hot spot for hiking with trails in the backyard. Pick a mountain to hike and there will be pretty views from each peak. Decide your level of hike and check out https://travelcrestedbutte.com/crested-butte-hiking-guide/
